Why raise awareness and funds?
Approximately 2.7% of the U.S. population is moderately to severely immunocompromised. This means that more than nine million Americans have immune systems that do not function properly. Those living with primary immunodeficiency (PI) are among those individuals. Primary immunodeficiencies are rare, chronic conditions. In medical school, many doctors learn the saying, "when you hear hoofbeats, think horses, not zebra" and are taught to focus on the likeliest possibilities when making a diagnosis, not the unusual ones. However, sometimes physicians need to look for a zebra. People with PI are the zebras of the medical world which makes it difficult for people to receive a diagnosis and proper treatment.

This is why it is so important to raise awareness and funds. IDF Walk for PI is about advocating, educating, and celebrating those affected by PI. To make an impact, we encourage all participants to raise awareness and funds for the PI community.
