Donor Spotlight: The Spencer Family

Thursday, June 24, 2021

As babies, Lainey Spencer and her younger brother Krew Spencer struggled with persistent illnesses - ear infections, bronchitis, and pneumonia. Krew, the sickest of the two, even developed an unusual infection in his knee, which required a three-day hospital stay.

Mom Kara Spencer, a teacher, missed 30 days of school one year staying home to care for her children, and that didn’t count the time that her husband Lucas and her mother spent watching over the babies.

The Spencer family includes Lainey, 7, her brother Krew, 6, dad Lucas, and mom Kara.

Kara insisted to her pediatrician that her children suffered from something more than the usual childhood illnesses, but the doctor hesitated to investigate further.

“My children were just so sick. I kept telling my pediatrician, ‘This isn’t right,’ and she kept saying, ‘It’s the daycare funk,’ and I said, ‘No, I know about the daycare funk. I’m a teacher,’” said Kara.

Finally, the pediatrician ordered blood work to check for primary immunodeficiencies. Immunologists diagnosed Krew, one-year-old at the time, with IgM deficiency, specific antibody deficiency, and complement system disorder, and Lainey, three at the time, with IgA deficiency, specific antibody deficiency, and complement system disorder.

Shortly after their diagnoses, Kara and Lucas sought out the IDF as a resource and decided to participate in the IDF Walk for PI. Kara said becoming a part of the Walk for PI effort helps her family spread the word about primary immunodeficiencies.

“We want to advocate for my children and other people who have immune deficiencies. Also, we want to make people aware of it. Nobody has heard about it, and my family has really banded together and learned so much,” said Kara.

The Spencer family joined the Chicago Walks for PI in 2017 and 2018 and transitioned to the Indianapolis Walk for PI in 2019. Between money raised at annual garage sales, personal donations, and funds generated from the Walks, Kara estimates her family’s Walk contribution at about $1,000 annually during those years.

Then came 2020 and the challenges of the pandemic. The Spencers joined in the Indianapolis Walk for PI, but this time virtually. Despite the restrictions, the family still pulled together and raised $525. Kara said that as communities ease out of the pandemic, she’s hopeful that the 2021 Walks will allow her family and friends to organize once again some of the fundraising activities they’ve done in the past.

“I definitely think we can do more fundraising this year. We can do our usual things, and then we plan on doing the Walk.   That’s our thing. That’s what we do,” said Kara.

Over the last several years, Lainey, now 7, and Krew, 6, have remained relatively healthy and don’t require immunoglobulin infusions, nor do they take preventative antibiotics. They have received vaccines and, for the most part, have launched immune responses. They also take allergy medication and vitamins.

Kara said that her family is fortunate that more medications aren’t required and that her children continue to do well.

“We are definitely blessed,” said Kara.

Donor Spotlight: Team CuKo

Wednesday, April 28, 2021

Curtis Anderson was diagnosed with Common Variable Immune Deficiency (CVID) at nine years old. Over 35+ years later, Curtis and his wife, Koryn, have continued to manage his condition and have become active participants in the IDF community. Together, they’ve attended IDF forums and regional and national conferences. When IDF announced the inaugural Walk for PI in Chicago in 2013, they were all in.

Curtis goes on to explain, “We have participated in every Chicago walk since 2013. IDF continues to be a constant source of support for our family. As a result, we focus our time and energy each year on increasing awareness and sponsorship for IDF through this annual event.”

When participating in IDF Walk for PI, Curtis and Koryn started small their first few years. They never expected to receive such increasing and continued support from their family, friends, and coworkers, and 2020 was no exception.

Curtis shares, “With 2020, there were countless competing charities and causes that needed assistance. We knew that a lot of our circle would be financially unable to support IDF as they had previously. However, we were absolutely astonished and overwhelmed by the outpouring of support we received in such unprecedented times. People that knew about my condition and remembered our annual walk continually reached out to see how we were doing and whether we were doing the walk in 2020. We were blessed that so many people kept us in their thoughts and charitable giving plans in 2020 despite the challenges. In fact, our 2020 team fundraising total was the highest total thus far!”

Team CuKo was able to raise over $14,000. Curtis and Koryn were amazed and grateful for their success but attributed a few methods to their fundraising success. When asked what fundraising advice they would give to newcomers, Curtis answered with the following four approaches:

1. Incentivize your supporters! In the early years of the walks, Curtis would leverage walked “laps” at Cantigny Park in the Chicago suburbs. For every $1,000 in donations, he would walk an additional lap of the course. In other years, and the most recent, he challenged his supporters to donate a certain amount to see him walk laps in a zebra costume. In 2020, his supporters met this challenge right up to the very last minute of Curtis’s virtual walk. His team hit $5,000 to ensure the Anderson neighbors got a great show, watching Curtis in a zebra costume pass by their windows!

2. Make it fun! No one wants to feel like IDF Walk for PI is a chore, so make it fun. Koryn helped rally Team CuKo by giving out zebra gear to each of their teammates!
3. Be vulnerable! Curtis and Koryn were always private when it came to Curtis’s CVID. However, as the years went on, Curtis decided to discuss it more openly, and it was the walks that made him completely public about his diagnosis. Curtis knew he could bring more awareness and support to IDF if people truly understood what PI is. Now, he attributes his vulnerability to the support system he has today.

4. Show appreciation!  Each year Curtis and Koryn write personal thank you cards to each supporter (regardless of donation size)! They frequently include photos, stickers, or magnets inside as an extra thank you. While Curtis admits that most donors say the thank you card is unnecessary, he and his wife feel it’s essential!

As an organization, we want to give a huge thank you to Curtis, Koryn, and Team CuKo! The support you provide is vital to the PI community, and it does not go unnoticed. We are excited to see Team CuKo have even more success in 2021. The IDF Walk Team is undoubtedly rooting for Curtis to be walking around Chicago in his zebra costume again!

As IDF Walk for PI 2021 is quickly approaching, we ask that you stay tuned to our IDF Walk for PI Facebook (@WalkforPI). Over the next month, we will be announcing the walk dates and locations, new features for the year, and when registration opens. We can’t wait for you to stride with IDF pride!

Donor Spotlight: Marilyn Rifkin & Debbie Junk

Wednesday, April 28, 2021

Marilyn Rifkin, diagnosed with Common Variable Immune Deficiency (CVID), attended her first IDF educational event in 2019. During the event, she was inspired and thought IDF offers so much; it’s so important that patients and families know about this organization. Without a second thought, she decided to volunteer as a walk-chair to bring a community walk to her hometown in Denver, Colorado.

Marilyn began to work very closely with IDF Walk Staff to establish a location, date, and other essential details to bring a walk to her city. Unfortunately, as plans came together, the COVID-19 pandemic hit. The walk venue had to be canceled, and a virtual option had to be put in place. However, this did not stop Marilyn or long-time IDF volunteer, Deborah (nickname Debbie) Junk, from making the walk a huge success.

Once the walk turned virtual and the Denver walk platform launched, Debbie, a Get Connected Group (GCG) facilitator in Colorado, took the initiative to support the walk by organizing a team including members from the Colorado GCG. Once hearing about the organized team, Marilyn reached out to Debbie, indicating her involvement with the walk making it a no-brainer for her to become a co-captain of the team!

Together, this dynamic duo raised over $3,000 for the walk. Marilyn and Debbie both agreed that when fundraising, the most important thing is to utilize every personal contact you know, not be afraid to share your personal story, explain why the funds are needed, and how they will be used.

Debbie shares, “My advice for anyone attempting to do this, and I hope you will, is to not underestimate the generosity of people. Show them how the organization benefits you and how much their donation would mean to your wellbeing, and I think you’ll find that family, friends, and acquaintances that you haven’t heard from in years will come to the rescue. Both Marilyn and I found that to be true.”

In the end, a virtual walk was not what Marilyn had envisioned, but it turned out to be a great blessing in disguise. Not only did it allow community members such as Debbie, who suffer from continuous vertigo and require the use of a walker, to participate, but it also allowed for more creative fundraising through the use of Facebook fundraiser, social media, email, etc.

Marilyn states, “As it turned out, a virtual walk was the best thing that could have happened.  Without the constraints of a geographical location, our fundraising area became unlimited.  People could join from anywhere, and they did. It was easy to reach a lot of potential donors through social media. I hope IDF continues virtual walks and builds on the expanded donation opportunities.”

Thank you to Marilyn and Debbie for being IDF Walk for PI volunteer rockstars! IDF appreciates all that you do, and we can’t wait to see what you both achieve in the 2021 walk season.

Donor Spotlight: Team Alli's Wonderland

Thursday, November 19, 2020

At just three months old, Allisyn began developing common colds and viruses that quickly turned into persistent, severe ear and respiratory infections that would lead to emergency room visits, medications, and numerous surgeries. After years of battling colds and exhaustion Allisyn’s mom, Michelle Lee, began to research and advocate to her team of doctors to help determine a clear diagnosis for her daughter. After years of not understanding why she was sick, Allisyn was diagnosed with Common Variable Immune Deficiency (CVID) in August 2019.

Since being diagnosed with CVID, IDF has been an incredible tool and support source for Allisyn and her family. In fact, IDF Walk for PI - Orange County was the first IDF event that the Lee family attended after Allisyn’s diagnosis. It was an uncertain time for the Lee family, but Allisyn had a blast during the event, and it far exceeded all expectations. It created such a fond memory for Alliysn that she immediately wanted to invite all her family and friends to join her again for IDF Walk or PI 2020.

Even though the walks are virtual, that is not stopping Allisyn. Her strong and positive spirit continues to guide her family and friends that surround her. As a team, Alli’s Wonderland has already raised over $3,000 by creating Facebook Fundraisers and utilizing the IDF Walk for PI app, which they use to track and receive all of their donations.

The Lee family states, “This year has been incredibly challenging for everyone during this unprecedented time, but IDF Walk for PI has given Allisyn and our family a fun and memorable event to share with family and friends. It has been truly amazing to see all the support we have received this year. Our family and friends have been incredibly supportive, and we truly cannot express how thankful we are to have them join us to show Allisyn is not alone!”

Today, Allisyn lives a normal life, like any other eight-year-old, by receiving weekly immunoglobulin (Ig) infusions. She now has the energy to do all the things she loves to do, including swimming with her siblings, playing basketball, and dancing with her friends.
If Allisyn and the Lee family have inspired you, please consider donating, fundraising, and participating in IDF Walk for PI. COVID-19 can’t stop us. Learn more here:

You've Got a Friend in Me!

Monday, September 21, 2020

Taylor Roth, first-time IDF Walk for PI participant, is raising awareness and crushing her fundraising goals by raising over $1,000 in Dallas, TX alongside her teamYou’ve Got a Friend in Me.

Taylor’s journey with primary immunodeficiency (PI) began after she gave birth to her son, Grayson. Shortly after Grayson’s birth, he consistently became ill. Being concerned first-time parents, Taylor and her husband took him to numerous doctors seeking answers. Soon after a move to Fort Hood, TX, their pediatrician thought Grayson’s constant battles with infections were unusual and encouraged more testing to be done. Through the testing, they found Grayson had an absent IgA and a low IgG leading to him be properly diagnosed with a PI in July 2019 at 18 months old.

After Grayson’s diagnosis, Taylor began to do an extensive amount of research - which led her to the Immune Deficiency Foundation (IDF). She immediately became interested in participating in IDF Walk for PI. Taylor and her husband have always been active and thought it would be the perfect opportunity to raise money to provide more research and ultimately help those affected by PI.

When asked how she raised over $1,000 so quickly, Taylor responded, “Honestly, just communicating with people and talking to people about the cause. We are blessed with amazing friends and family who are extremely supportive. Once we told people about the walk we had so many people who wanted to walk with us, join our team, and donate. I made a Facebook post about raising money for my son's disease and family and SO many friends were front row and ready to contribute. Our son is so loved!”

Taylor and her team plan to continue fundraising and hope to raise $2,000 before their Virtual Walk on Saturday, November 14. If you are inspired by Taylor and her story and want to help, register for IDF Walk for PI today. Learn more at www.walkforpi.org!

Primary Immunodeficiency in the World of Pageants

Thursday, September 3, 2020

A member of our IDF community, Trena Myers, is proudly wearing her zebra stripes in the world of pageantry, raising awareness for those affected by primary immunodeficiency (PI). Trena first began competing in pageants in 1998. She enjoyed pageantry but could never understand her purpose for doing them. Without having a purpose, in 2009 she decided to take a break.

During this break, Trena struggled with numerous infections and a weakened immune system. This turned into a decade of misdiagnosis, causing her to struggle emotionally and physically. It wasn’t until 2017 that Trena was finally diagnosed properly with Hypogammagloblinanemia. After her diagnosis, Trena turned to art as a way to cope with her disorder, relieving much of her stress and anxiety. This ultimately gave her the passion and reason to compete in pageants once again.

Trena’s pageant platform is emotional wellness. She discusses her PI with others as a way to raise awareness and uses it as a common ground to discuss the challenges that people face day-to-day. Her goal is to educate others on those living with PI, along with helping people cope with the daily stresses of life.

Today, Trena volunteers for the Immune Deficiency Foundation (IDF) to support the PI research initiatives. She has participated in IDF Walk for PI for the past two years in Atlanta, GA to help improve diagnosis and access to treatment for those with PI. Each year, Trena has a blast at the walks, feeling the energy and power of the IDF community. She is especially excited to think creatively; the walks are virtual this year and can reach people globally.

Trena is honored to be named Ms. Woman Georgia United States 2020 and is hoping to use her title as a way to raise awareness and funds for IDF. Trena states, “My purpose is to be a voice to help others connect with their inner self and empower them to show their uniqueness. Life is just like a canvas, you can make even the muddy colors become a beautiful work of art.”

I Walk to Find a Cure: Didi McDonald

Wednesday, October 9, 2019

Didi McDonald’s life was forever changed after being diagnosed with Common Variable Immune Deficiency (CVID) last year in 2018 at 26 years old. After receiving her diagnosis, Didi felt overwhelmed and unsure of how to cope with a disease that she never heard of. However, life became easier once she discovered the Immune Deficiency Foundation (IDF).

“IDF made the diagnosis manageable with all the amazing resources they provide,” says Didi. “I am very thankful that IDF exists to bring us together and to help us manage our diagnoses.”

Today, Didi is actively participating in IDF Walk for PI – New York City. She has currently fundraised $1,550 and plans to earn more leading up to the walk. Her advice to fellow walkers who are trying to fundraise is to have your close friends talk to their friends, that way the social circle of donors grows quickly. Didi goes on to explain, “I walk for PI in the hopes that one day we can find a cure for these diseases. There are so many others out there who suffer from chronic issues due to having a weak or non-existent immune system and I hope that one day there will be a cure.”

If you are inspired by Didi and her story, please consider walking with her at www.walkforpi.org/newyork. Together, we are #ZebraStrong!

Joseph Maronski puts the FUN in Fundraising!

Tuesday, September 3, 2019

Fall is just around the corner. That means it is time for warm sweaters, pumpkin spice lattes, and of course 26 IDF Walk for PI events happening across the country. IDF Walk for PI is a time to walk as an IDF Community to raise awareness and funds for those living with PI. While you are just starting to begin to raise funds for your walk, we wanted to introduce you to Joseph Maronski, a long-time IDF fundraising activist.

Joseph first started his journey with IDF in 2012, when he was only in the 5th grade. This was the year that his brother, Vincent Maronski Jr., was officially diagnosed with Common Variable Immune Deficiency (CVID). Joseph was determined to fix his brother and to do that he decided to focus his efforts on fundraising. Since then Joseph has raised over $15,000 through various campaigns and donations! His most popular campaigns have included:

  1. The Pie for PI Challenge – co-founded by Joseph and Maddie Shaw.

The Pie for PI Challenge was an in-school fundraising program to help educate students about primary immunodeficiency (PI) diseases and provide them with the opportunity to make a difference. The challenge created incentives for students to pie teachers and administration, while also creating a world record attempt for the worlds’ largest pie fight! This campaign was definitely designed to put the FUN in fundraising. Check out Marcia Boyle, IDF Founder, participating in Pie for PI after the students had raised over $3,500: https://www.facebook.com/ImmuneDeficiencyFoundation/videos/10152982844901781/

  2. Clothing Fundraisers

Throughout the past seven years Joseph has held multiple clothing fundraisers. He has personally designed and sold bracelets, t-shirts, and sweatshirts in honor of his brother through Custom Ink which has allowed him to raise over $5,000. The clothing was always worn at every Walk for PI event his team and him attended!

  3. Icon Cards

Joseph also raised money by doing an old-fashioned approach. He received icon cards from IDF by e-mailing: walk@primaryimmune.org and sold them for $2 each. The icon cards allowed students to write their name on the card, which entered them into a raffle for one of three gift cards. These icons cards generated around $1,000 in sales alone!

Joseph dedicates a lot of time and effort to fundraising, but he feels it is totally worth it in the end. He states, “Fundraising is about more than just money to me. It is about making a difference. It is about spreading awareness. It is about putting a smile on someone's face who may not have a reason to smile. Awareness is knowledge and knowledge creates change. The Walk for PI is an amazing way to spread awareness and allow people to forget about life for a few precious moments.”

We hope as you are preparing for IDF Walk for PI you are inspired by Joseph and try a new fundraising idea! Together we can spread awareness and change thousands of lives in the process.

P.S. You can see Joseph at numerous walks throughout the fall as our official IDF Walk for PI - MC! Make sure to stop and say hi!

A new discovery - Thanks to you!

Monday, July 29, 2019

We have some exciting news to share. A new type of primary immunodeficiency disease (PI) has been discovered called TLR8-associated disease, and it is a direct result of people who participated in a Walk for PI event!

Thanks to the funds raised by individuals that participated in an IDF Walk for PI, the Immune Deficiency Foundation (IDF) was able to award a 12-month research grant to Megan Cooper, MD, PhD of the St. Louis Children’s’ Hospital and Washington University School of Medicine, which led to the identification of TLR8-associated disease.

Join us at one of our 26 Walks across the country and continue your impact on the PI Community. By participating and raising funds, you are ensuring that IDF can continue to provide grants to power critical patient-focused research that will ultimately lead to cures of all types of PI.

Thank you for your continuous participation and support.  – The Walk Team at IDF

Who do you walk for?

Friday, July 12, 2019

Meet Aubree, a four-year-old girl who lives in Massachusetts. Since she was a baby, she has experienced frequent ear infections, many episodes of bronchitis and a few cases of pneumonia. To help alleviate her constant illnesses, she had ear tubes placed as well as her adenoids and tonsils removed—none of which helped.

After years of struggling and battling infections, in October of 2018, Aubree was diagnosed with Common Variable Immune Deficiency (CVID), a type of primary immunodeficiency disease (PI). Since diagnosis, she visits the Boston Children’s Hospital every three-four weeks for a six-hour infusion of intravenous immunoglobulin replacement therapy (IVIG). This treatment helps her fight infections by giving her antibodies she can’t create. Fortunately, over the past six months, Aubree has built a wonderful supportive care team at Boston’s Children’s and has been able to build strong bonds with different people. She hopes
to continue to build these connections at her very first IDF Walk for PI this fall in Boston.

Her mother, Nicole, says, “We don’t know what the future holds with this diagnosis as every person is different hence the zebra symbol, but I know we have the support and love to get her through all of this!”

Is your story like Aubree’s? Do you know someone like her? No matter how you’ve been affected by PI, show your support this fall at IDF Walk for PI! Together, we can stride with IDF pride and continue to support individuals and families living with these rare, chronic disorders.

Double Your IDF Walk for PI Fundraising Efforts Today

Monday, July 1, 2019

Do you want to double the money you raise for IDF Walk for PI? If yes, then we’ve got an easy suggestion for you: use matching gifts!

Many corporations offer matching gift programs that can double an employee’s donation to an eligible nonprofit organization, including the Immune Deficiency Foundation (IDF). We want you to take advantage of this opportunity to potentially double or even triple your fundraising efforts for IDF Walk for PI 2019. Click here to see if your employer participates.

Remember, every dollar you raise through IDF Walk for PI supports educational resources and programs that help the entire PI community, and matching gifts can simply double the impact you have on people living with PI.

Share this fundraising tip with your friends, and tell them to sign up for a walk at www.walkforpi.org.

We look forward to seeing you at a walk this fall!

Register Now & Win

If you register you or your team before June 20, 2019—the first day of the IDF 2019 National Conference—you will be entered to win one of these fabulous prizes:

Winners will be announced on the IDF Walk for PI Facebook page on Mondays at 12 Noon ET: June 3, June 10 and June 17. (Make sure to follow us: www.facebook.com/walkforPI.)

Stride with IDF Pride: 4 Steps to Success

We want you and your team to Stride with IDF Pride! You will receive the 4 Steps to Success as soon as you register so that you can make this year the best yet.

Remember, with each step you take, you help create better lives for people with PI. The funds you raise go directly to IDF to support programs and resources for individuals with PI and their families, and they enable IDF to support research! Did you know that since 2017 the IDF Research Grant Program has awarded 14 grants to PI researchers totaling $375,000? All made possible because of IDF Walk for PI funds…because of people like you!

Raise $125 (or More!)
We challenge you to raise a minimum of $125 this year, and we know you can do it between now and your walk! We have resources on our new website to help you! And, of course, when you raise $25, you’ll receive the exclusive IDF Walk for PI 2019 t-shirt.

You will make a difference this year and in years to come as you #StridewithIDFPride! Thank you for your support of IDF Walk for PI 2019!
