Primary Immunodeficiencies (PI) are inborn errors of the immune system. This means that there are parts of a person’s immune system that are either non-existent or do not function as they should. There are more than 450 different types of PI. Our Logan was born with one of the most severe forms of PI known as Severe Combined Immunodeficiency (SCID). In SCID patients like Logan, they are born looking healthy on the outside but the most important part of their immune system is missing. These are white blood cells known as T cells. Without treatment, SCID babies will die before their first or second birthday. The only treatment option in Logan’s case was a bone marrow transplant at 2.5 months of age. Logan was able to be diagnosed from Newborn Screening at only 6 days old. With such quick results, we knew the diagnosis before Logan was exposed to any germs. We were able to keep him healthy and isolated from the outside world until after treatment. September 3, 2021 was his transplant day, and now almost 2 years later he is living a beautiful and healthy life.
My family and I would like to make a personal thank you to a very special Not for Profit Organization known as SCID Angels for life. This organization is responsible for getting SCID added to Newborn Screening in all 50 States and providing exceptional resources for support to SCID patients and their families from diagnosis, treatment and life after treatment. I decided to join this fundraising event for the IDF community to honor Logan and all the many other children living with a SCID Diagnosis. This team will be representing the SCID Angels for Life Organization in Florida. If you are are able to join this team to walk in person with us in Tampa on October 7, please join here! If you are unable to attend in person and would like to make a contribution you can do that here as well.
Please know your contribution to the Immune Deficiency Foundation will go towards educational support for patients and their families and continued research to provide patients with the most up to date and best treatment options.
